Children's Film - "Space Girl in Space"

>:3

Our target audience was aimed at a PG, however, due to the lack of speech and massive continuity errors, we believe (after much observation), that it should be downgraded to a U. However, apart from the fact that we had many errors whilst filming and editing, we do believe that we made our moral statement clear, that stealing is wrong.

Pros:
Our children's film is about a schoolgirl who falls asleep in her lesson and dreams that she is 'SPACE GIRL'. We created the opening scenes using the green room. To make our first clip when grace falls asleep we done it in a empty classroom. We edited in sound from the classroom so that created ambient sound. To make our titles we got a starry background to make it 'space like' and a picture of a 'space girl'. On Photoshop we edited it all together and put in text. We are happy with the titles we created because they look professional. We are also happy with the music we created for the whole 2 minutes. We used 3 different tracks we made on Garage Band. One is used for the first 30 seconds, one is used for the rest and then the other is used right at the end for the credits. We are happy with the music because it suits our genre. It is ‘space like’ and tension building but it is also happy because it is a children film.

Cons:
Making our children’s film our group found we didn’t have enough time in the green room therefore we found when we were actually filming we were rushed and missed parts out; such as less speech. We were left with only a little bit of speech that we could use in our clip so we had to edit bits from other clips in so it there is a issue with continuity. It is mainly the backing track and sound effects. We had difficulty when editing the puppets we had made for our antagonists because they were a similar colour to the background in the green room. The sticks we had also made for our puppets to hold them up weren’t very strong so it was hard to have the puppets in the screen without our hands.  Whilst editing on one of our clips we lost ‘Space Girls’ voice so we had one clip without sound.

Using the green screen

When we applied the Chroma Key filter to remove the green and add the space background, we noticed that the main character (Grace), had a purple face. We think this is because frantic movements looked like blurry motions on the camera, and this caused the chroma key filter to only partially removing the green behind the blurry motions, causing a purple color. Unfortunately, there is no fix for this, so we have configured the chroma key to show the least amount of purple, but there's still a lot of it.

Today we added the images of the houses and banks into the background. This was a bit tricky, and because we were rushed for time, we had to resort to pictures off of google images, which wasn't our first choice. But we think it will still look nice, and we made sure the building chosen were colorful and stand out, so that kids find them "fun"...

This last lesson we've all pulled together to polish off our final piece, although we had to rush a bit, we still think it will turn out brilliant.

Hooray for optimism!

Editing lesson three

In this lesson we did the music that would be played in the middle of our children's film opening, we went with the theme "Spacey" because our film is set in space. Kiefer and Alice edited the film, and removed unnecessary scenes and clips for final editing where we apply the green screen. Also on top of that we had issues with time, where it was turning only to be 1:15 long. This caused trouble for us, because we only have a certain amount of footage already filmed, so to solve this we ensured we had all the necessary clips, credits, images etc...

There is good level of care in research and planning.

As shown in this print screen we try our best to keep our blog easy and understandable to read. We have also written in small paragraphs so that our writing is easier to digest. On top of writing less we have tried to use a variety of videos and illustrations on our blog to give the readers who don't like reading a lot, a chance to get a sense of what our blog is about.

As you can see our story boards are easy to understand, well constructed and easy to see the main points of the story. They're neat due to the fact we drafted some of the images before hand in preparation for doing to the final story board.

We have a range of videos to show that we have taking influence from some of the trailers we have watched, for example this one:

which is from the film "Hook", we used this to get a good range of genres to help add to our own ideas.

Own Ideas

Live Action:
-Interactive
-Green Screen

Animated:
-Puppets
-Plaster-scene
-2D Animation

We decided to choose a mix between 2D animation, and live action film after watching this trailer from the film "Space Jam". We thought it was fitting, due to the fact that it's a kids film, and it's age rating is PG. We wanted to do a mix between 2D and live action because our group couldn't decide on doing either 2D or live action, so we mixed the two.

Some ideas we came up with for things to incorporate into our film:
- Use of puppets
- Use of green screens
- Live action
- Play-doh
- 2D Animation

Some ideas we came up for Story Lines were:
- Super hero girl who lands on a foreign planet / weird world with aliens and lasers.
- (Animated) Speaking pig finds human friends and then switch lives "A Twisted Tail" (Bud-dum-tish)
- A person on a computer finds a website were a character (animated), comes to life and sucks the child into the computer. (Willingly)
- Small child meets a talking dog with magical powers and goes on magical adventures to save their tree house (Their house).

U Rating

U - Universal
- Must be suitable for ages 5 and up
- Must have a positive moral
- Must be suitable for children to watch alone
- Balances out threats with reassuring nice things (E.g. Rainbows and stars)
- No Drugs, Discrimination, Extreme Violence or Cursing
- No sex or sexual references

Why Toy Story 3 meet the criteria:
It meets the criteria because it doesn't have any scenes of extreme threats that weren't overcome by Woody and his friends. There's no sexual or drug references throughout the entire film, and the plot line isn't too complicated for children to follow. It also gives the positive moral of friendship and sharing.

Analysis to the opening of Incredibles

The animation we chose was incredibles, right from the start we're introduced to each character and thrown right into the story line by the car chase.  The "Mise En Scene" in the opening presents the costumes which in turn, introduces us to the genre of the film. This is because the costumes used are very "Super Hero" like (E.g. Spandex and Logos). The lighting in the film is natural, despite being animated on the computer, and also the editing where shots such as; resuming shots, dramatic close-ups, long shots and cuts are used to express the genre and explain the story. It explains the story by cutting from Mr Incredible and the car chase to give a sense of the timeline between the two. The music in the intro is very steady, it keeps fast paced until Mr Incredible kicks in.

Comparing the differences Wall-e and The chronicles of Narnia

Firstly the differences between the science fiction clip; Wall-e, and the adventure film; Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian are how one is set in the past, and the other is set in the future. Wall-e is a movie about a love story between two robots, where as Narnia is a story about a group of friends who stumble upon a hidden world, where they have to save the people of Narnia. Wall-e is presented in animation (CGI form), and the Chronicles of Narnia is a live action film, with CGI special effects (E.g. Animals and Creatures).

Jumanji opening

Sound - Starts with spooky tension music to set the scene as well as the animal noises such as birds and wolves. When burying the game diegetic drums start to play giving suspense to the audience. There is also dramatic thunder adding to the tension. When the jungle scene finishes the music is quickly turned cheerful to fit the scene. Later on the music increases in tempo when some action is put in.

Toy Story opening

The film opens with still shots to introduce the story and characters. The happy music and bright colours suggest a happy environment. Meanwhile the titles are scrolling in plain white to not distract us from the main bit of the film due to the type of the target audience. Lastly at the end of the opening we are finally introduced to the problem, 'The party's today!'

Childern's film, Preliminary task

By  doing this task we learnt how to use the camera and work well in a team. We also learnt the 180 degree rule and also the most effective way to get the camera shots we wanted. However we had to re-film a few shots because we missed out filming them.
